What Happens During A Cleaning?
Physical Exams
An early pediatric dental exam will give our team the chance to examine your child’s teeth and gums for potential issues such as cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth damage. Low-radiation X-rays allow Dr. Kris to get an accurate picture of your child’s teeth. We also use this time to help educate your child on best practices for brushing and flossing to keep their smiles bright and clean.
Routine Cleaning
While proper at-home care is important to promote a healthy smile for your child, special cleaning is still necessary. We use special tools to remove plaque and stubborn build-up around your child’s gum line and in the gaps between their teeth, especially in those hard-to-reach places. After scraping off any build-up, we clean your child’s teeth with an electric brush and gritty toothpaste on all sides.
Lastly, our dental hygienist will thoroughly floss and polish your child’s teeth to leave them bright, smooth, and clean!
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a preventative treatment that helps to strengthen enamel and fight cavities months after your child’s appointment with Dr. Kris. This treatment is most effective when combined with a healthy diet, regular flossing and brushing, and keeping up with routine appointments at our office. We also use fun flavors for fluoride treatments, so most of our young patients enjoy this part of their appointment.
Why Kid Dental Cleanings Are Important
Cavity Prevention
One of the most important reasons for dental cleanings is to avoid cavities. When cavities fester, signs of tooth decay appear. As a result, the child may need a root canal or cavity filling—two procedures more demanding than routine cleaning.
Tooth Loss Prevention
Dental cleanings reduce the chances of your child losing their teeth to gum disease. Plaque buildup is the leading cause of gum disease. It causes tooth loss by destroying the supporting bone tissues in the jaw. Regular dental exams and cleanings help prevent this problem.
Maintenance Of Fresh Breath
Uncontrolled growth of bacteria is the main cause of bad breath. Dental exams and cleanings every six months keep the oral environment odor-free.
Brighter Smile And Improved Self Confidence
Regular cleanings give your child whiter and brighter teeth. With few stains and almost no plaque and tartar, the child will feel more confident about their oral health.
